Paul Leonard Newman: Hollywood Icon Retires:

Veteran actor Paul Newman, one of Hollywood’s greatest stars has retired from acting at the age of 82.

Paul Newman, (born January 26th 1925)who was nominated 9 times for an Oscar and has starred in more than fifty films, claims he is no longer able to perform to the best of his ability. "I'm not able to work anymore... at the level that I would want to" said Newman in an interview. Paul Newman's career on stage and screen has endured for more than five decades. He made his acting debut at 7, as the court jester in a school production of Robin Hood.
Newman won an Oscar for his role as Fast Eddy Felson in the film, The Color Of Money opposite Tom Cruise. In 1987. That award came a year after he won an honorary Oscar for his many memorable and compelling screen performances.
"You start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention. "So I think that's pretty much a closed book for me." "Newman said during a T. V. interview.
Starring in the 1969 western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with Robert Redford was one of his biggest hits and they joined up again to star in The Sting in 1973. Newman appeared in the film Road to Perdition in 2002 for which he received another Oscar Nomination. He also acted in the T.V. mini-series Empire Falls and won an Emmy. He has been married to actress Joanne Woodward since 1958. Newman, when asked why he never committed adultery by Empire magazine, he famously replied, "Why go out for a hamburger when you have steak at home?"
Paul Newman became an avid race car fan, driver and racing team owner since his love of the sport was kindled in 1969 while training for and filming the movie Winning.
In recent years, the Ohio-born star has also set up a successful food business. Profits from his food production company are donated to charity, while the actor has helped establish a number of camps for critically ill children. As of May 2007, these donations have exceeded $220 million USD. In 1994, the Academy awarded him the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his charity work. In all, he has three Oscar statuettes.
Newman served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He flew from aircraft carriers as a rear gunner in the Avenger. He had hoped to be accepted for pilot training, but did not qualify because of being color blind. Newman studied acting at Yale University and also under Lee Strasberg at the Actors’ Studio in New York City.
Newman made his Broadway theatre debut in the original production of William Inges’ Picnic with Kim Stanley. His first movie, The Silver Chalice (1954) has been described by Newman himself as the "worst movie of the entire 1950s decade."
